Plot summary
Franny Ellis is an anthropology student in Morocco when she hears that her brother Henry, an aspiring musician, is in a coma after a car accident. She stays with her mother Karen in New York City. Franny listens to his music, sits by his bed, and learns that his favorite performer is the British singer-songwriter James Forester, who is touring nearby. She goes to his concert and afterward speaks to him about Henry. She begins reading her brother's journal and traveling to the spots he frequented. James comes by the hospital room and performs a song for Franny and Henry. That night the two spend time together. James admits that since his first album he has written nothing new, and Franny describes the argument she and Henry had about his choice of music as a career.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Song One (2014)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Franny was originally written as 24 years old; after Anne Hathaway, then 30, asked to play her, director Kate Barker-Froyland rewrote the part as an older woman, which gave Franny more reason not to want a music career.
- Anne Hathaway's short haircut from Les Misérables was written into Song One: instead of waiting for her hair to regrow, director Kate Barker-Froyland incorporated the cropped style into the script.
- Producer Jonathan Demme told Jenny Lewis and Johnathan Rice to record Song One's music the way Skip Spence made his 1969 psychedelic album Oar; the duo wrote eleven songs and seven were used.
