Plot summary
Divorced with two children, Hilly Kristal puts money borrowed from his mother into a Bowery space with his former partner Merv Ferguson, meaning it for country, bluegrass and blues music. His teenage daughter Lisa drops out of school and stays while the two men build a stage. Country acts are hard to book and customers are few until a rock band, Television, auditions. Kristal takes them on, insisting on original music and no covers, and their shows bring publicity. Blondie, Patti Smith and Talking Heads begin playing there, while a fanzine called Punk writes about the bands. The club becomes a gathering place for the punk movement, and the magazine's founders spend time there.
