Plot summary
Will Proudfoot is eleven and his family belongs to the Plymouth Brethren, a strict church that forbids television and cinema, and when a documentary is shown in class he is sent out to the corridor, where he meets Lee Carter, the school's most disruptive pupil. A broken fish bowl leaves Will owing Lee, and Lee trades his silence for the watch that belonged to Will's dead father. In return, Will must take the stunts in an amateur film Lee is shooting on his older brother's video equipment to enter a competition. Hiding from Lawrence at Lee's house, Will glimpses a pirate copy of First Blood and is taken by it. He joins the dangerous action scenes while keeping the partnership hidden from his family and from Brother Joshua, who shows a growing interest in his mother.
