Plot summary
The summer of 1991 finds Nebraska City teenagers A.J. and Moose brewing beer to sell to classmates and betting on dog races until their parents shut the brewing down. Shane, an older friend back from the Gulf War, tells them the community pool's snack shack is available for the season, and the pair win the rights at a city council auction with an overbid that draws on A.J.'s college savings, to the dismay of his parents, the Judge and Jean. The shack does brisk business from its first day. Then Brooke, whose father is in the military, moves in beside A.J., photographs people on impulse, teases him about his allergies, and, with his help, gets hired as a pool lifeguard. A.J. is infatuated; Moose is smitten as well.
