Plot summary
Johnny 5, the self-aware robot, leaves the ranch of Newton Crosby and Stephanie Speck for a city, where his friend Ben sells hand-built toy robots from his truck. An assistant buyer named Sandy Banatoni places an order for a thousand of them. Fred Ritter, a con artist who overhears the offer, becomes Ben's partner in the deal and finds the money Ben needs. The two take on workers and set up in a derelict warehouse, not knowing that thieves use the same building as a base for tunneling toward the vault of a bank across the street. Two men wreck their equipment and the crew flees, so Johnny drives them off and begins building the toys himself. He explores the city, where strangers treat him rudely, and befriends Oscar Baldwin, a worker at the bank across the street.
