Plot summary
Clifford Peache lives in a Chicago hotel where his father works as the manager, and a hotel limousine drops him each morning at his new high school. There Melvin Moody leads a gang of bullies who shake down students for lunch money, claiming the payments buy protection from Ricky Linderman, a sullen classmate whom school legend accuses of killing several people, his own brother among them. Clifford refuses to pay. He seeks out Ricky and asks him to serve as his bodyguard; Ricky turns him down, then steps in when Moody's gang corners Clifford. The two grow closer while Ricky rebuilds a motorcycle, and Clifford helps him search junkyards for a missing engine part.
