Albert Maysles

Biography

Albert Maysles was an American documentary filmmaker who, with his brother David, became a leading figure in the Direct Cinema movement, an observational style that avoided narration and staged setups. Born in Boston, he studied psychology and taught at Boston University before a research trip to Russia led to his first film, Psychiatry in Russia (1955). He and David later joined Drew Associates and then formed Maysles Films in 1962. The brothers produced more than 30 documentaries, including Salesman (1969), Gimme Shelter (1970), which recorded the Rolling Stones' 1969 American tour, and Grey Gardens (1976), a portrait of two reclusive women living in a decaying East Hampton mansion. Their work also covered artists and musicians, and Christo's Valley Curtain earned an Academy Award nomination. Albert received a Primetime Emmy for Soldiers of Music and a 2013 National Medal of Arts.
