Plot summary

Zack Siler is a well-liked senior at a high school in Southern California. When spring break ends he learns that his girlfriend, Taylor Vaughan, has been seeing Brock Hudson, a reality television star, and she breaks up with him. Zack's standing around campus drops. He claims that any girl in school could take Taylor's place, so his friend Dean Sampson challenges him to turn a randomly chosen classmate into prom queen within six weeks. Dean's pick is Laney Boggs, an awkward art student whom Zack approaches for help with his own art. She reluctantly lets him come to the performance art piece she is in, then turns him down when he tries to charm her.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about She's All That (1999)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • There were two versions of Laney's red dress: a stunt double dress kept for the scene where she falls in a driveway outside a party, and a second, smaller dress that left Rachael Leigh Cook holding her breath to get through the scene quickly.
  • The dance scene was choreographed by Adam Shankman at the request of co-producer Jennifer Gibgot, who is his sister. Shankman worried it would not tonally mesh with the film, and when test audiences did not understand why it was happening, Bob Weinstein asked for a reshoot with Usher to link the scene.
  • Laney Boggs was named after two characters played by Winona Ryder, Kim Boggs from Edward Scissorhands and Laney Pierce from Reality Bites, and the characters Zack and Taylor were named after two of the three members of the band Hanson.
  • In a 2002 interview M. Night Shyamalan said he polished the screenplay while adapting Stuart Little and writing a spec script for The Sixth Sense; in 2013 he claimed he had actually ghost-written the film, which Fleming disputed.
  • Costume designer Denise Wingate said the prom scene was put together with no budget at all: everything in it was white, black and gold, and all of it came from The Salvation Army and was completely reworked.
  • Director Robert Iscove said Josh Hartnett was considered for the role of Zack Siler, and that Mena Suvari, Leelee Sobieski and Jordana Brewster were among the many actresses considered for Laney Boggs.
  • She's All That was the last film to be reviewed by the critic Gene Siskel before his death in February 1999.
