Plot summary
Timur is a Barlas commander, and his clan falls under suspicion when Qazaghan, the Chagatai ruler, is killed and a dagger is found beside the body. Timur's uncle Hadji, who leads the Barlas, insists his people are innocent and takes up arms against the Mongol overlords, but Timur keeps away from the rising and pledges himself to Tugluk Khan. Qazaghan's heir Hussayn goes into hiding. Timur commands the Baghatur, a warband that protects Silk Road caravans from the bandit Banu and her Scottish mercenary James. Summoned to Samarkand by Tugluk Khan's son Ilias, he weds Aljai, Hussayn's sister, and a child is on the way. Tugluk Khan makes him Ilias's chief advisor, holding him at court, and at a banquet Ilias compels him to swear his loyalty again.
