Plot summary
Agatha Christie's play The Mousetrap has reached its 100th performance in London, and the producer John Woolf has hired the American director Leo Köpernick to make a film version. After Köpernick behaves drunkenly toward the leading lady, Sheila Sim, her husband and co-star Richard Attenborough trades blows with him. An unseen attacker then kills Köpernick backstage. Inspector George Stoppard takes the case, with the inexperienced Constable Stalker assigned to assist him. Everyone at the theater is counted as a suspect and a possible victim. The play's producer, Petula Spencer, has granted Woolf the rights for a film, though his contract keeps him from making one until the stage run ends.

- The decision to make a film around a thwarted film production of The Mousetrap came after the producer Damian Jones was told the rights to the story were unavailable because of a stipulation in Agatha Christie's original contract, which then became a plot point in the film.
- Filming was largely conducted in London's West End during the UK's third COVID-19 lockdown, which allowed the production to use locations that would otherwise have been unavailable, including the Savoy Hotel, The Old Vic, the Dominion Theatre and St Martin's Theatre.
