Plot summary
Father James Lavelle serves a small parish in rural Ireland. During confession, an unseen man says he was molested by a priest as a child, that the abuser is dead, and that he will kill a good priest in a week's time, on the beach. Bishop Montgomery tells James he may go to the police, since the penitent sought no forgiveness and the threat is a pending crime. James keeps to his duties while many in the parish meet him with antagonism. Veronica Brennan wears sunglasses at mass to cover a bruise, her husband Jack denies causing it, and the mechanic Simon tells James to mind his own business. Fiona, James's daughter, arrives after a suicide attempt; he says he entered the priesthood after her mother died.
