Secrets of the Magic City (2014) on Netflix

Plot summary

For a school report, Amiya Castle sets down accounts of the summer she spends in Liberty City, an area of Miami, after her mother leaves her with relatives and she feels discarded. She writes of her summer infatuation with a neighborhood thug and of a young girl trying to keep her drug-addicted mother alive. She also writes of Nia and Tiana, sisters who look out for each other and want to remain outside the welfare system, which housed them for several years after their mother abandoned them. Their only available relative has taken them in, and they feel hopeful.
