Plot summary
Maya Vargas has worked fifteen years at a Queens Value Shop, where her ideas have raised sales, and she expects the manager's job when the company executive visits. Instead she is passed over for Arthur, an outsider with an MBA from Duke, because company policy requires a college degree and Maya has only a GED. Her godson Dilly quietly rebuilds her background online, and the cosmetics firm F&C calls her in for an interview. Its CEO, Anderson Clarke, hires her as a consultant on the strength of the invented credentials, and his daughter Zoe, a vice president, greets her coldly. Maya's boyfriend Trey wants her to admit the truth and to start a family, and she takes the job anyway.
