Plot summary
Kay and Arnold Soames have been husband and wife for thirty-one years, and their children are grown. The affection between them has faded, and for some time each has slept in a room of their own. Kay finds a book by Dr. Bernie Feld and books a week of sessions with him in a Maine resort town. Arnold insists nothing is wrong, yet he agrees to the trip. In the doctor's office the two are pressed with blunt questions about their feelings and their intimacy. Arnold keeps his guard up, grows irritated, and does not grasp how unhappy his wife has become.
