Plot summary
Seventeen-year-old Sarah Landon spent childhood vacations in Pine Valley, California with her friend Megan, who has recently died. Megan's grandmother, Thelma Shaw, invites her for the weekend. On the road Sarah's car breaks down, and the mechanic's assistant, Matt Baker, gives her a ride; she knew Matt and his older brother David as a child. Carlos, the mechanic, tells her the local story of the Bakers and their uncle, Ben Woods, who blamed David's mother for the crash that killed his son Johnny and swore that David would die on his twenty-first birthday. David now lives as a recluse above the family barn, absorbed in the occult, and the birthday is days away. Sarah and Matt try to help him.
