Plot summary
On Halloween night Drew Decker is alone at home when a threatening call comes in, and a figure in a Ghostface mask chases her outside. The attack brings news crews, among them reporter Gail Hailstorm, to the high school that Cindy Campbell attends with her boyfriend Bobby Prinze, her friends Brenda Meeks, Ray Wilkins, Greg Phillippe and Buffy Gilmore, and Brenda's stoner brother Shorty. Cindy and her friends share one secret: a year earlier the car they were in struck a man, and they sank his body in a lake and agreed to tell nobody. Cindy wants the police told, and Greg, fearing prison, refuses and beats her. From her classroom she spots the masked figure watching her through the window.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Scary Movie (2000)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Aaliyah was offered the role of Brenda but declined out of respect for fellow R&B singer Brandy, feeling that the Scary Movie character parodied Brandy's role in I Still Know What You Did Last Summer.
- Dimension Films bought two rival spoof scripts, the Wayans brothers' and Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer's Scream If I Know What You Did Last Halloween, and gave the second to the Wayans brothers; the Writers Guild of America then credited both groups, infuriating the Wayans, who argued none of Friedberg and Seltzer's work was used.
- Anna Faris had planned to live and work in London after graduating from the University of Washington, but went to Los Angeles for a year instead, auditioned and booked her first acting job; Keenen had rejected many other actresses and took a chance on her inexperience because of her instinctual performance.
- Although the film's Ghostface mask and costume was a replica, the original costume from the Scream series was used for the scene where Cindy notices the killer outside of the school.
- The film broke Air Force One's record for the biggest opening weekend of any R-rated film, and generated the second-highest opening weekend of 2000, behind Mission: Impossible 2.
