Plot summary
Nick DeMarco runs small-time cons until his parole officer sends him into minimum-wage work, a department store Santa suit for the holidays. He hates the job. Late in his first shift, he makes a boy named Billy a promise he has no way to deliver: a Christmas reunion of the boy's estranged parents. Nick's sister Rose is furious when she learns of it, unwilling to see a child's hopes built on a pledge her brother cannot keep. A long night of thinking, and the counsel of a pastor, leave Nick determined to honor what he said. Then he meets Carol, Billy's mother.
