Plot summary

Lucille uses a wheelchair after being hurt in the Gulf War, and he is searching New Orleans for his friend Melvin so that a documentary crew can follow him. They find Melvin passed out in the street. Melvin drinks heavily and takes drugs, parties with his friends, and funds it by performing street shows in which he moves objects with his mind. Lucas, who teaches science at the community college, keeps testing Melvin's telekinesis; all he can say is that Melvin's brain is put together a little differently than most people's. Melvin refuses to see a specialist. His ex-wife Doreen has sole custody of their young son Rex and has taken out a restraining order against him. Lucille wants Melvin clean and sober, but Melvin only promises.
