Plot summary
On Mount Trollenberg, a climber falls past two companions on a ledge below, and the body they haul up has had its head torn off. His is not the first death there; people who go up the mountain are never found. On the train through the Alps, Anne Pilgrim faints at the sight of the peak and insists that she and her sister Sarah get off at Trollenberg, though she has never been there and cannot explain how she knows the town. Alan Brooks, a United Nations troubleshooter on his way to the observatory, hears from Professor Crevett of a cloud on the south face that never moves and gives off radiation, and recalls a similar pattern in the Andes three years earlier.
