Plot summary
Marshal Antonio Carotenuto, the veteran officer of a small Italian village, is in love with Annarella Mirziano, the local midwife, who has a son. Regulations forbid an officer to marry a woman with an illegitimate child, so a wedding would cost him his post. Lieutenant Pietro Stelluti, who serves under him, is engaged to Maria De Ritis. When Pietro is sent to a town far away, he asks the marshal to watch over Maria. Maria is poor and needs to collect a dowry, so she goes to work in the marshal's house while his maid, Caramella, is ill. Talk about the marshal and Maria spreads through the village.
