Gina Lollobrigida
Biography
Gina Lollobrigida was an Italian actress who ranked among Europe's most prominent stars of the 1950s and 1960s. Raised in Subiaco and later Rome, she took small parts in Italian movies from 1946 and first drew wide attention with Bread, Love and Dreams (1953), which brought her a BAFTA nomination and a Nastro d'Argento. Beat the Devil (1953), directed by John Huston, was the first of her films to reach a wide English-language audience, and she won the first David di Donatello for Best Actress. She had the main female part in Trapeze (1956) and later starred in Come September (1961), which won her a Golden Globe, along with Solomon and Sheba (1959), Never So Few (1959), Woman of Straw (1964), Hotel Paradiso (1966) and Buona Sera, Mrs. Campbell (1968), a role that earned her a third David di Donatello and a Golden Globe nomination. She later turned to photojournalism and acted on television in Falcon Crest.
