Plot summary
After the war, Sagliena, a small town in central Italy, has a new marshal: Antonio Carotenuto, an elderly womanizer who takes charge of the Carabinieri station, with his maid Caramella keeping his house. Maria, a young woman the whole village calls la Bersagliera, loves the carabiniere Stelluti in secret, and he loves her and wants her mother to learn of it. Stelluti is one of the men who report to the marshal. Paoletta, who serves as sacristan at the parish, is also in love with Stelluti. The marshal turns his attention to la Bersagliera, while Annarella, the town's midwife, begins to show her love for him.
