Plot summary
During the holiday season, the Muppet Theater struggles financially, and the Muppets look to Kermit the Frog for answers. Kermit is irritable and fears losing the theater. Rachel Bitterman, a banker and real estate agent, tells him she will foreclose unless he pays her. She persuades Pepe the King Prawn to hand over the sole copy of her father's contract with the Muppets, then alters the payment deadline. Pepe falls for Bitterman and leaves the Muppets, while Miss Piggy departs for Hollywood. Kermit tries to recruit a celebrity for the Christmas show and travels to California to bring Miss Piggy back. An angel named Daniel and his Boss observe Kermit's plight from above.

- Snoop Dogg was cast for a cameo in the film, but his scene was cut after a backlash over his involvement at the time in the adult-entertainment series Girls Gone Wild.
- The film was shot after the September 11 attacks, yet one scene set in the world where Kermit was never born still shows the Twin Towers in the background, because the photo background mural had been created before the attacks.
- Veteran Muppet performer Jerry Nelson was in poor health during filming, so most of his characters were puppeteered on set by others and Nelson dubbed them afterwards; Bill Barretta performed Lew Zealand, the only exception.
- It was the first Muppets production made without veteran performer Frank Oz: Eric Jacobson took over Oz's characters Fozzie Bear, Miss Piggy and Animal, his feature-film debut as those three.
- Brian Henson performed Scooter, the puppet's first significant appearance since the death of original performer Richard Hunt; Henson also performed Janice, another of Hunt's characters, in her first speaking role since Hunt's death.
- It was the last Muppets production before the Walt Disney Company acquired the characters and franchise from the Jim Henson Company in 2004.
