Plot summary
Ebenezer Scrooge is a greedy, penny-pinching moneylender in 19th-century London who keeps apart from the Christmas merriment around him. Christmas Eve finds him refusing to join his nephew Fred for dinner, turning away two gentlemen who are out collecting for charity, and throwing a wreath at Bean Bunny, a carol singer. His clerk Bob Cratchit and the other bookkeepers ask to have Christmas Day free, and Scrooge agrees without enthusiasm. That night, in his bedchambers, two figures bound in chains appear to him: Jacob and Robert Marley, the business partners he outlived. They urge him to change his conduct, or he will share their punishment after death, and they tell him that three spirits will come to him during the night.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- David Hemmings, Ron Moody, David Warner and George Carlin were considered for Ebenezer Scrooge before Henson offered the part to Michael Caine, who vowed to play it like the Royal Shakespeare Company, never wink or do anything Muppety.
- To put Muppets and human actors in the same shot, floors were removed and re-inserted, and Michael Caine had to walk across narrow planks between the Muppets and their performers.
- Walt Disney Studios chairman Jeffrey Katzenberg cut "When Love Is Gone" from the 1992 U.S. theatrical edition, saying it would not appeal to young viewers; Brian Henson objected because the closing song "When Love Is Found" was a direct counterpoint.
- After the script was submitted to ABC, Walt Disney Pictures executives offered to purchase The Muppet Christmas Carol for a feature film instead of a television release.
- Robin the Frog or Scooter, Miss Piggy, and Gonzo or Animal were initially written as the three Christmas ghosts, but the idea was scrapped for new Muppet characters that would better underline the ghosts' ominous nature.
- The London street buildings were hand-built at reduced size to make streets look longer, but the short buildings showed in the crane shot ending "It Feels Like Christmas"; Brian Henson said they knew during shooting and kept the shot anyway.
- It was the first Muppet film produced after the deaths of creator Jim Henson and performer Richard Hunt, and the film is dedicated to both.
