Plot summary
Florípides, known as Flor, teaches cooking in 1940s Bahia and marries Valdomiro, whom everyone calls Vadinho. He is an attentive lover who admires her proper manner, and his attention turns the once inhibited Flor into a woman who knows physical pleasure. But he would rather spend his time at casinos and brothels than at home, he beats her, and he takes the savings she makes from her cooking school. When he drops dead at a street carnival, only Flor mourns; her friends and family treat the loss as her chance at happiness after the misery his spending and his lack of respectability brought her.
