Plot summary
Jack Noah is a little-known actor who goes to Parador, a small South American country, to work on a movie. President Alphonse Simms, Parador's dictator, invites the cast and crew to his palace, where he takes pleasure in Jack's imitation of him. When Simms dies of a heart attack, Roberto Strausmann, the president's right-hand man, does not want to give up his position. He turns to Jack, who looks much like the dead leader, and presses him into the role of the president. Jack agrees, and his performance persuades the public, while the people who knew Simms are harder to convince.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Director Paul Mazursky played Momma, the dictator's mother, himself in drag after Judith Malina had to drop out over a job in Germany; he took the credit Carlotta Gerson, using his own mother's maiden name.
- Parador's national anthem is a joke built from borrowed tunes: Sammy Davis Jr. sings it to the music of "Besame Mucho", while the old anthem "O Parador" runs to "O Christmas Tree", which opens with the "Wedding March".
