Plot summary
Lauren Adrian reports for the Chicago Sentinel and wants to cover the war in Iraq. Her editor, George Morgan, sends her instead to Ciudad Juárez, on the United States and Mexico border, where young maquiladora factory women have been killed. The plants, opened under the North American Free Trade Agreement, hire Mexican women for long hours and little pay. Eva Jimenez, a worker from Oaxaca, rides the bus home after her shift. In Juárez, Lauren looks up Alfonso Diaz, the editor of El Sol de Juárez, whom she had worked with six years earlier, and she meets Eva. Lauren hopes a strong story will win her a foreign posting.

- When Bordertown filmed in Ciudad Juárez, executive producer Barbara Martinez-Jitner said the police threatened locals who were helping the production and stalked the crew; a camera truck was vandalized and $100,000 worth of film equipment was stolen.
- Director Gregory Nava said the Bordertown production received threats against himself and the cast, plus stolen equipment, and that film crew members were intimidated while shooting in Mexico.
- Gregory Nava first approached Jennifer Lopez to star in Bordertown in 1998, and she said she "desperately wanted to tell this story" and worked to get the film made to pressure the Mexican government to prosecute those behind the Juárez murders.
