Plot summary
Thornton Melon made his fortune in plus-size clothing stores and other ventures, and his son Jason has kept his distance since enrolling at Grand Lakes University. Visiting the campus, Thornton finds Jason unhappy with college life, serving as the diving team's towel boy, turned away by the fraternities and picked on by the diver Chas Osborne. His only friend is his roommate Derek Lutz. Thornton, hoping to keep his son in school, decides to enroll alongside him. The dean, David Martin, admits him after Thornton offers a donation toward a new campus building, and Dr. Phillip Barbay, dean of the business school, takes offense at Thornton's practical manner in class. Jason catches the eye of Valerie Desmond, whom Chas has been trying to impress.

- Before the end credits the film dedicates itself to Estelle Endler, an executive producer who died during production; she was Rodney Dangerfield's long-time manager and helped him get into films such as Caddyshack.
- The University of Wisconsin-Madison stood in for the fictional Grand Lakes University, and the diving scenes were shot at the Industry Hills Aquatic Club in the City of Industry, California, which has since been demolished.
