Plot summary
Harry Collings and Arch Harris have wandered the American Southwest for seven years, taking work where they find it. With a younger companion, Dan Griffen, they are fishing a river when they haul up the body of a small white child. Harry puts the corpse back in the water and lets the current carry it off. The three ride into Del Norte, a ramshackle town ruled by a corrupt boss named McVey. There Arch and Dan talk about going to California to look for work, but Harry tells them he is tired of drifting without purpose. He has decided to go back to the farm, the wife, and the daughter he walked away from seven years earlier.
