Plot summary
Jenny Hawthorne and Mary Hollins work at a cotton mill in Hindle and take their holiday together in Blackpool during the town's Wakes Week. At the seaside Jenny runs into Alan Jeffcote, the son of the mill's owner, who is in Blackpool with friends while his fiancée is detained in London on business. Jenny has watched Alan from a distance at the factory, and the two get along at once. When they go off on their own, he talks her into leaving Blackpool for a week with him in Llandudno. To keep the trip from her parents, Jenny writes out a postcard that Mary is to post to them later in the week, and Alan registers them at a hotel on the seafront under the name Mr and Mrs Jeffcote.
