Plot summary
Summer vacation has started at Third Street Elementary, and T.J. Detweiler expects to spend it with his friends. He learns that they are each headed to a different summer camp. Passing the school on his bike, T.J. spots a green glow from the auditorium and watches scientists working with a tractor beam that a group of men had stolen from a military base. His parents and the police dismiss his story. Principal Prickly agrees to show him the building is empty, and vanishes while trying to enter it. With nowhere else to turn, T.J. pressures his older sister Becky into driving him to the camps so he can bring his friends back to Third Street.
