Plot summary
Lucy Eleanor Moderatz works at the Randolph/Wabash station as a fare token collector for the Chicago Transit Authority, and she is secretly infatuated with Peter Callaghan, a regular commuter, though the two are strangers. On Christmas Day, muggers push Peter onto the tracks, and Lucy pulls him out and goes with him to the hospital. There his family comes to believe she is his fiancée, and they are grateful to her for the rescue. Lucy is too embarrassed to correct the mistake, and she also does not want to upset Elsie, Peter's grandmother, who has a heart condition. Lucy spends a belated Christmas with the Callaghans and meets Peter's younger brother Jack, a carpenter expected to take over the family furniture business, though he would rather build his own.
