Plot summary
Scott Calvin is a divorced marketing director in Lakeside, Illinois who wants his eight-year-old son Charlie to keep believing in Santa Claus. Charlie's mother Laura and her psychiatrist husband Dr. Neil Miller think the boy is old enough to give up the idea. A noise on the roof wakes Scott and Charlie on Christmas Eve, and Scott startles Santa Claus, who falls and vanishes, leaving behind a suit, a sleigh and reindeer. Scott puts the suit on and takes the sleigh around town, then the reindeer carry him and Charlie to the North Pole. There the head elf Bernard explains that by wearing the suit Scott has accepted the duties of the late Santa, and gives him eleven months to settle his affairs.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about The Santa Clause (1994)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- When Scott rattles off the number "1-800-SPANK-ME", he was reading out a line that really worked in 1994: a toll-free sex line run by American TelNet that steered callers to premium 900 numbers. Two children in Concord Township, Ohio, worked it out after seeing the film that December.
- Disney's legal department tried to buy the 1-800-SPANK-ME service outright and switch it off, and failed. In 1997 it promised a complaining father, whose ten-year-old daughter had run up $250 in charges, that the line would go, and from the 1999 DVD it was cut from American home releases.
- Scott Calvin was offered to Bill Murray and Chevy Chase before Tim Allen. Chase had a scheduling clash and Murray did not want a second Christmas picture after Scrooged; Tom Selleck, Robin Williams, Tom Hanks and Mel Gibson were all considered too.
- Eric Lloyd, who plays Charlie, knocked his teeth out in an accident on a day off during the shoot, so he had to act in false teeth and some of his dialogue was rearranged around the damage.
