Plot summary
The liner Poseidon was flipped by a tsunami and now floats upside down in the sea. Six survivors have already been taken off by the French Coast Guard. Mike Turner commands the tugboat Jenny, which lost its cargo in the same wave; when he spots the rescue helicopter he locates the wreck and sets out to claim salvage rights, taking second mate Wilbur Hubbard and a passenger, Celeste Whitman. A second party arrives, led by Stefan Svevo, whose men say they are Greek Orthodox medics answering the ship's distress call, and they board through the opening in the hull. Inside, the two groups come upon more survivors still aboard, among them nurse Gina Rowe, Suzanne Constantine, Frank Mazzetti, who is looking for his daughter Theresa, and Harold Meredith, who is blind, with his wife Hannah.

- In 1973 producer Irwin Allen proposed a very different sequel: the survivors would testify at a hearing in Austria, and a miles-long mountain tunnel would collapse around their train, leaving them trapped. That premise was eventually used in the Rob Cohen film Daylight (1996) with Sylvester Stallone.
- After the huge success of the film, Gallico was asked to write a novel that would be a sequel not to his first novel but to the film; he started it, died on July 15, 1976 before completing the book, and it was published on January 1, 1978.
