Plot summary
Anne Leeds is a schoolteacher who has just started out, and she adds an evening job at a Broadway nightclub to her days in the classroom. Rocco, who owns the club, is a former bootlegger who bets on horses; he falls for Anne and, believing himself too old for her, keeps it to himself. Anne's attention goes to Rocco's younger partner, Tony Armotti, a playboy who keeps an apartment above the club, reached by stairs off the back alley, and fills it with women. Tony wants to protect Anne and resents her for being there. The two partners quarrel over many things, and she is one of them. The club's staff and performers take to Anne, though Tony does not.
