Plot summary
Harry Bundage, a con artist, believes the lost treasure of Captain Joshua St. Edmund is hidden at Candleshoe, Lady St. Edmund's country estate. His cousin Clara, a former cleaning woman there, has passed him the captain's first clue. Harry recruits Casey Brown, a streetsmart American foster child, to pose as the Honourable Margaret, Lady St. Edmund's granddaughter, who vanished ten years ago at age four. Casey has the right age and two scars the missing girl was known to have, and agrees to hunt for further clues for a share of the profits. At Candleshoe she finds Lady St. Edmund living in genteel poverty, an estate that can barely cover its taxes. Priory, the butler, pawns antiques, conducts tours and sells produce at market to keep foreclosure away, helped by four orphans Lady St. Edmund has taken in.
