Plot summary
At a secluded asylum that houses the incurably insane, Dr. Martin hopes to take up a post. The warden, Lionel Rutherford, is in a wheelchair after an attack by Dr. B. Starr, the former head of the institute, who broke down and took on a new personality. Rutherford doubts that a doctor trained in London grasps mental illness, and sets a test: Martin must interview the patients and work out which of them is Starr. The orderly Max Reynolds lets him through the security door, under orders to give no clues. Bonnie, Bruno, Barbara and Byron each tell Martin a strange account.
