Biography

John Stratton was a British actor who was born in Clitheroe, Lancashire. He came to notice in the 1950s through youthful film parts, playing the apprentices Ferraby and Ward alongside Jack Hawkins in The Cruel Sea (1953) and The Long Arm (1956). For television he took a comparable role, Captain Potter, in Quatermass and the Pit, the third of the Quatermass serials, working with André Morell. He moved into character roles in the 1960s and appeared in many television dramas of the decade, including It's Dark Outside, where his part was Fred Blane, an alcoholic journalist. He also had parts in long-running series such as Z-Cars and Doctor Who, and in 1980 he took the central role of Jess Oakroyd in an adaptation of J.B. Priestley's The Good Companions.
