Plot summary
The funfair accident that kills Nicki Johnson's father leaves her with nightmares and a lasting sense of guilt. Seven years later she lives with her mother Anne, who has withdrawn from her and taken up with her latest boyfriend, the con-artist Harry Spenton. Nicki often skips school to be with her own boyfriend, Peter. One day, home alone with Harry after a riding lesson, she is cornered by him; he tries to seduce her and tells her that her trust fund is in his control. She stabs him in the struggle. She is placed in a remand home for girls with emotional and behavioral problems, where bullying and violence are routine. Nicki keeps her head down until Sarah, an inmate with a fearsome reputation, becomes her protector.
