Plot summary
Bill Farrell and Marge Bradley marry in Norrisville, but an alien took Bill's shape on the eve of the wedding, so the man Marge lives with is not the man she knew. He drinks no alcohol and behaves as though he has no feelings toward her. The dog she gives Bill as a surprise anniversary present snarls at him whenever he comes near. A year into the marriage, Marge, who wants a family, has not become pregnant. Tests show that she can have children, and her doctor says Bill should be examined as well. She sees the same change in the husbands of the other couples they know.
