Plot summary
Simon Robinson comes to a small seaside community to take up the post of teacher at the local school. He soon learns that the man who held the job before him is gone, and that no one in the community seems much troubled by it. Among his new acquaintances are Jenny and David Abbott, siblings who live at the Summerfield estate with Jenny's daughter Sally. Sally suffers from a rare blood disorder. What became of the previous teacher is on Simon's mind, and the household at Summerfield comes to matter more to him the more he asks about the man's disappearance.
