Plot summary
Late in the 1960s, four boys at a Catholic orphanage in the outback of Australia have grown up together as the closest of friends. All four were born in December, and after a windfall the orphanage sends them on a holiday: Maps, Misty, Spark and Spit travel to Lady Star Cove on the South Australian coast to stay with Mr. and Mrs. McAnsh. In the cove they meet Fearless, who says he rides a motorbike in the carnival, and his wife Teresa. Misty overhears Fearless talking about adopting one of the orphans and keeps the possibility to himself. Maps, the eldest, spends his days with Lucy, an older teenage girl visiting her uncle.
