Plot summary
In the Australian outback in 1955, a shearing team arrives at a sheep station for the season, and Foley joins them as a gun shearer. He is a talented professional who drinks heavily, and he shares a room with Old Garth, once a great shearer and now a drunk. The men work and drink together, isolated from town, and they want a new cook and press to get one. The contest of the season is the place of top shearer, which Foley and Arthur Black both want, and Foley also makes a play for Sheila, who is the station owner's daughter.

- The first cut of Sunday Too Far Away ran more than two hours; in post-production scenes were trimmed, Foley's romance with the grazier's daughter was removed and his car crash was moved from the end of the film to the start. The changes caused a great deal of conflict between Ken Hannam, Gil Brearley and Matt Carroll.
- Sunday Too Far Away was the first feature film produced by the South Australian Film Corporation, which had wanted to make a film about the Gallipoli campaign and considered a co-production with Crawford Productions.
- Shooting on Sunday Too Far Away began in May 1974 near Port Augusta and Quorn in South Australia, but the production ran into rain and flooding and was finished behind schedule.
