Matthew Cowles
Biography
Matthew Cowles was an American actor and playwright who started on the Broadway stage, playing the title part in Edward Albee's adaptation of James Purdy's novel Malcolm in 1966 and appearing in The Indian Wants the Bronx, Israel Horovitz's play, two years later alongside Al Pacino and John Cazale. Born in New York City, he was the son of the actor and theater producer Chandler Cowles. On television he first played Joe Czernak in the series NYPD in 1969, and he created and wrote the role of Billy Clyde Tuggle on All My Children, which brought him Daytime Emmy nominations in 1978 and 1981. He made his film debut in the comedy drama Me, Natalie (1969), and in 1983 he joined the Mirror Repertory Company for a season of plays. He also acted in Martin Scorsese's Shutter Island in 2010 and in short plays for the public radio show Playing on Air.
