Plot summary
From childhood Natalie Miller has considered herself homely, with her overbite and large nose, and she has never shared her mother's certainty that she will grow up pretty. Her best friend Betty is a blonde cheerleader going steady with Stanley. Natalie's attempts to become a cheerleader and to enjoy her graduation dance come to nothing, and her parents, worried that she has no job and no suitors, try arranging dates for her and her father offers Morris, an awkward aspiring optometrist, money to marry her. Natalie leaves her parents' apartment for Greenwich Village, rents a loft and takes a job as a cocktail waitress. Her downstairs neighbor David, an architect who has quit to paint, asks her to model for him.
