Plot summary
Jack Conroy sets out for San Francisco and leaves his wolfdog, White Fang, in the care of Henry Casey. The two sail toward town with their gold and end up washed ashore. Moses Joseph, chief of the Haida, has dreamed of White Fang and of his niece Lily, and he reads the dream as a sign that the wolf will save his starving people. Lily goes to the river, hears barking and glimpses White Fang before he vanishes; Henry stands in his place, so she brings the stranger home. White Fang crosses the wilderness, meets a wolf pack and moves on alone. The chief hands Henry a bow and arrows for practice, and Peter, the chief's son, practices with him. Lily asks to join the hunt, and her uncle refuses.
