Plot summary
Veronika Deklava lives in New York City and works as an assistant accounts executive. One night she swallows a line of prescription pills with a drink, after typing an email to the Village Voice about the world she considers unreal; readers trace it back to her and she collapses. She wakes in Villette, a private mental facility, strapped to a bed. There Dr. Thompson tells her that her heart stopped and that a damaged artery will burst within one or two weeks, and Dr. Blake says she will receive regular injections. Her roommate, Claire, tells her a parable about a wizard who drove a kingdom's subjects mad. Veronika refuses to speak to her visiting parents, who mention the piano she once played, and a silent patient, Edward, looks back at her in the halls.
