Plot summary
Cody Maverick, a teenage northern rockhopper penguin living in Shiverpool, Antarctica, has wanted to be a professional surfer since a meeting years ago with the famous emperor penguin surfer Zeke "Big Z" Topanga. When talent scout shorebird Michael Abromowitz arrives looking for entrants for the Big Z Memorial on Pen-Gu Island, Cody proves his skills and earns a place in the field. A documentary crew travels with him. On the way he befriends Chicken Joe, a rooster surfer from Sheboygan, Wisconsin. On the island he meets Lani Aliikai, a gentoo penguin lifeguard, and Tank "The Shredder" Evans, a king penguin with nine titles to his name. Cody's own boards are made of ice, and the Pen-Gu waves are different. After Tank vandalizes Big Z's memorial, Cody challenges him to a duel.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Surf's Up (2007)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- To obtain the desired hand-held documentary feel, the film's animation team motion-captured the moves of a physical camera operator and gave them to the animated camera.
- Sony already had a surfing penguin project in development, described as West Side Story meets Romeo + Juliet. Chris Jenkins said it wasn't a good idea, so the project died; he then re-presented the idea himself, but with a documentary angle.
- According to the film's end credits, the version of "Wipe Out" heard in the film is performed by the punk band The Queers. The official soundtrack includes this version under the pseudonym "Big Nose", presumably for marketing purposes.
