Marianne Faithfull
Biography
Marianne Faithfull was an English singer and actress. Discovered by Rolling Stones manager Andrew Loog Oldham at a party in 1964, she broke through with the single As Tears Go By, a UK top 10 hit, and her 1965 debut album Marianne Faithfull, which she followed with further records for Decca. She began with a melodic, high-register voice that later turned raspy and lower in pitch. Her screen work included Made in U.S.A. (1966), I'll Never Forget What's'isname (1967), The Girl on a Motorcycle (1968) and Hamlet (1969), and her 1979 album Broken English, a critical and commercial comeback, brought a Grammy nomination for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance. Later films were Intimacy (2001), Marie Antoinette (2006) and Irina Palm (2007), the last earning a European Film Award nomination for Best Actress. In 2011 the French government made her a Commandeur of its Ordre des Arts et des Lettres.

Faithfull's first professional stage role came in 1967, when she played Irina in a Royal Court Theatre adaptation of Chekhov's Three Sisters opposite Glenda Jackson and Avril Elgar.

Faithfull was discovered in early 1964 at a Rolling Stones launch party, where she met the band's manager Andrew Loog Oldham, who took her on.
Beyond film
Faithfull played both God and the Devil on screen and stage: God in guest spots on Absolutely Fabulous, and the Devil in the 2004 musical The Black Rider.

Faithfull played Pirate Jenny in The Threepenny Opera at Dublin's Gate Theatre, and that interpretation led to her album Twentieth Century Blues of Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht songs.
