Plot summary
Georges Randal, an orphan in turn-of-the-century Paris, is raised in the household of his uncle Urbain Randal alongside his cousin Charlotte, and falls in love with her. At twenty-one he asks for his parents' money and learns that his uncle stole it. Since he has no fortune of his own, his uncle rejects him as a husband for Charlotte and betroths her instead to a dim-witted aristocrat. In retaliation Georges steals the family jewels of the fiancé. The burglary pleases him so much that he embarks on a career as a gentleman thief, robbing the wealthy bourgeoisie of the city.
